Main page design

Looking at other projects in the wake of Wikicamp and then at our main page, I thought it looks too "text-heavy." Maybe we should create a special banner for the main page, where we could put a welcome message and some information about the project — for example, statistics on how many pages, images, etc. have been created?

Types of users. User management

Wiki project participant groups: blocked user – bot – anonymous user – registered user – autopatrolled – patroller – administrator – bureaucrat – oversighter – checkuser – steward – developer – dictator / founder – unique roles

Every wiki project has certain participant groups. When a new wiki project is launched, it has (by default) only 3 participant groups: bots, administrators, and bureaucrats. But through fine-tuning, as well as through the blocking tool, many additional participant groups can be created.

Here are the main participant groups that can exist in a normal, developed wiki project:

  • Founder or Benevolent Dictator — the head of the wiki project, the person who founded it. Usually granted unlimited rights — all groups available in the project and server access.
  • Developer — a participant capable of managing the wiki project's database (MySQL), and also (most often) holding all participant rights available in the wiki project (most often for testing capabilities).
  • Steward — a participant capable of fully managing all existing rights, but only through the wiki project itself. In Wikimedia Foundation projects, also manages participant rights across all Wikimedia wikis.
  • Checkuser — a participant capable of verifying participants' IP addresses. Such rights are usually entrusted to respected participants.

Oversighter (oversight) — a participant capable of hiding any edits from all participants.

  • Bureaucrat — most often a participant capable of granting administrator and bureaucrat rights, as well as renaming participants and managing bot rights. But in most new wiki projects the bureaucrat is equal to the steward in rights.
  • Administrator (sysop) — a participant capable of blocking users, protecting and deleting pages, and editing the interface. Administrator rights are usually mistakenly considered a privilege. Administrator is a purely technical role.
  • Druzhinnik (brig) — a unique flag of Wikireality. Viktor Perfilov was the first druzhinnik in history.
  • Reviewer — a flag allowing full modification of review levels on articles. Currently underdeveloped.
  • Patroller (editor) — a participant who marks articles as reviewed. Necessary for vandalism control.
  • Importer (import) — a participant capable of importing page versions from other wikis via interwiki import or XML.
  • Uploader — a new flag in the Foundation, an enhanced autoconfirmed user who can upload files to a wiki; requires 14 days and 25 edits.
  • Autopatrolled — a participant whose edits are automatically marked as reviewed. This participant group is fairly rare, but exists on "Traditsia" and Wikipedia.
  • Registered user — a participant who has their own username and can advance through wiki roles.
  • Autoconfirmed user — a participant who has the ability to upload files, rename pages, and edit semi-protected pages. Autoconfirmation usually requires 4 days. In some projects a certain number of edits is also required.
  • Bot — a participant capable of hiding their edits from the recent changes list. In a broader sense, a bot is a program performing various routine operations within a wiki project.
  • Anonymous user (anonymous) — an unregistered participant identified not by name but by IP address. Anonymous users can only edit pages.
  • Blocked user — a participant against whom a block has been placed in a wiki project. Formally such a participant has no right to continue participating in the project where the block was imposed, but in most cases experienced participants circumvent the block and continue working in the wiki project.

Andrey Volykhov proposed introducing the role of "Doctor" in the Russian Wikipedia, who would have the right to treat any user, admin, checkuser, admin, bureaucrat, vandal, or bot.

Arbitrators (in slang — clowns) are elected by wiki project participants. Only participants enjoying broad community support can become arbitrators; ordinarily the minimum confidence threshold for becoming an arbitrator is 70 % support. The committee can be staffed all at once — 5 arbitrators every six months — or incrementally, with new arbitrators elected at set intervals to replace those who have left (a system analogous to elections to the United States Senate).

Currently the Arbitration Committee of the Russian Wikipedia has 5 arbitrators, the French — 10, and the English — 16.

In the Russian Wikipedia the majority of the community treats arbitrators with respect, while the opposition, on the contrary, ridicules them at every turn. According to the opposition, the arbitrators of the Russian Wikipedia are an integral part of a special unofficial body known as the Firing Squad.

The Lurkmore Paradigm

<..> The majority of the project's articles are of good quality and in finished form, and are also supported by references. Poor articles are quickly deleted by moderators.

Articles must be informative, funny ("contain lulz"), and as objective as possible. However, some articles may be written in an offensive-satirical form or contain unreliable information. Such articles are as a rule placed in a special namespace "for lulz," i.e., for laughs. As for unreliable information in articles, the administration's official position is that truth takes precedence over lulz. That is — it can be funny, but the main thing is that it be truthful.

This is the main distinction from Encyclopedia Dramatica, where lulz matter more than facts.

The resource is in conflict with almost all other wiki communities; particularly intense rivalry has been observed with wiki projects such as the Russian Wikipedia, Kashchepuzia, Traditsia, and Absurdopedia.

Lurkmore has its own special lexicon, consisting mainly of words used on imageboards, as well as memes that originated within the project itself. See the separate article for more detail.

On 24–25 April 2009, advertising (from Google) appeared on Lurkmore for the first time, causing indignation among part of the audience. However, overall activity remained at its pre-advertising level and even increased slightly. On 31 October, advertising was expanded, and as a result the site's technical staff had to rewrite part of the project's Monobook code, causing the left navigation panel to nearly double in size. This state of affairs triggered a significant wave of anonymous hatred, which spilled into both the main page discussion and the "notice board."

It currently runs on the MediaWiki engine; by the end of the year there are plans to migrate the site to a new engine written specifically for it.

The project has an active IRC channel on the RusNet network — #lurkmore.
