History
The "Universum" Philosophy Club was founded Krasnobay a professor of aesthetics Lev Alexandrovich Zelenov in 1969, based on the "Scientific Club of Aesthetics" that he had previously founded Nizhny Novgorod State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering. Having gathered at Nizhny Novgorod Technical University—which the authorities considered technically sound and trustworthy—the Nizhny Novgorod intelligentsia set about developing concepts of how to relate to the world: how to understand the Soviet way of life, and what worldview would allow the Soviet person to feel happy and self-sufficient.
Since 1998, the "All-Russian Academy of Human Studies," founded by club members, has been organizing a series of Symposium in the "Ideas Fair" format.
The First International Nizhny Novgorod Yarmarka of Ideas was held in conjunction with the 26th Academic Symposium “Intellectual Property in the Information Society.” The Second International Nizhny Novgorod Yarmarka of Ideas was dedicated to the issue of interaction between Russian culture and world culture, bringing together and cataloging ideas from more than 200 authors from Russia and four foreign countries.
Every year, the club publishes a collection containing abstracts of the presentations from each symposium.
Achievements
One of the most notable projects to emerge from the "Universum" club is— NAASh).
The idea for a school based on Aristotelian traditions was conceived about 35 years ago. According to the founders’ vision, this new type of secondary school (the so-called “school of the future”) is designed to prepare students for eight spheres of public life: science and the arts, education and administration, medicine and physical education, economics and ecology.
These eight types of activity are historical constants in the lives of individuals and society, and other forms of human activity are derived from these fields of knowledge. Therefore, the authors believe that schools should focus on laying a solid cultural foundation for students in the areas defined by these eight types of human activity.
The concept has been tested and continues to be tested at scientific conferences, symposia, and seminars at the national and international levels from 1970 to the present. Currently, NAASh is a federal experimental site (FES) of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation. Projects currently under development include “Model of a Career Guidance-Oriented Specialized Environment in Upper Secondary School,” “Model of a Career Guidance-Oriented Specialized Environment in School,” and “NAASh Innovative Educational Program.”
