The Nizhny Novgorod State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering (NNGASU) is a higher education institution in Nizhny Novgorod that trains specialists in the fields of architecture and construction. At various times it was known as the Gorky Engineering and Construction Institute named after V. P. Chkalov (GISI, GISI named after V. P. Chkalov) and the Nizhny Novgorod Institute of Architecture and Civil Engineering.

The university was established on June 23, 1930, as the Nizhny Novgorod Engineering and Construction Institute (NISI) through the separation of the construction faculty of Nizhny Novgorod State University into an independent technical institution.[1] From 1932, the institute was renamed the Gorky Engineering and Construction Institute (GISI), and from 1938 to 1991 it bore Valery Chkalov.[1] In 1991 the institute was renamed the Nizhny Novgorod Institute of Architecture and Civil Engineering awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labour (NASI); in 1993 it received academy status and the name Nizhny Novgorod State Academy of Architecture and Civil Engineering (NGASA); and in 1997 it attained university status and its current name.[1]

The university trains specialists across a wide range of fields: designers, architects, civil engineers and technologists, managers, economists, and lawyers.[1] Across the university's 39 departments, more than 500 faculty members are employed, including 55 professors and doctors of science, more than 250 associate professors and candidates of science, as well as 60 members of Russian state, professional-public, and international academies.[1]

From 1987 to 2005, the rector of the university was Valentin Vasilyevich Naydenko — a full member of the Russian Academy of Architecture and Construction Sciences, an Honored Scientist and Engineer of the Russian Federation, a member of the Supreme Ecological Council of the Russian Federation, and a laureate of the USSR and the Russian Federation Government Prize in Science and Technology.

On the university grounds stands a turbine blade from the first hydraulic turbine of the Nizhny Novgorod Hydroelectric Station.

Notable faculty and staff

The biographies of many prominent Nizhny Novgorod residents are connected with the university:

  • Voronkov Vadim Vasilevich — professor, Honored Architect of the RSFSR, Chief Architect of Nizhny Novgorod from 1961 to 1986, laureate of the USSR Council of Ministers Prize and the Nizhny Novgorod Prize.
  • Bobylev Vladimir Nikolaevich — first vice-rector, head of the architecture department, professor, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Architecture and Construction Sciences, Honored Worker of Higher Education of the Russian Federation, Honorary Builder of the Russian Federation.
  • Bodrov Valeriy Iosifovich — head of the department of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, doctor of technical sciences, professor, Honored Worker of Higher Education of the Russian Federation.
  • Borisov Anatoly Fedoseyevich — head of the department of life safety, doctor of chemical sciences, professor.
  • Vinogradova Tatyana Pavlovna — professor at the UNESCO chair of NNGASU, candidate of technical sciences, author of more than two hundred publications on history and local studies.
  • Kossoy Yuriy Markovich — professor, Honored Worker of Housing and Communal Services of the RSFSR, honorary member of the International Association of Urban Electric Transport Workers.
  • Zubkov Viktor Vasilyevich — professor in the department of architectural design, director of OAO "Zubkov's Architectural Studio".
  • Gordeyev Boris Aleksandrovich — professor in the department of standardization and engineering graphics, doctor of technical sciences.
  • Dutsev Mikhail Viktorovich — associate professor in the department of architectural design, candidate of architecture.

Valery Shantsev has been awarded the title of honorary professor of the university.
