Nizhny Novgorod Encyclopedias by Subject

We would like to remind readers that the encyclopedia publishing project is being carried out with the support of the Union of Journalists of Nizhny Novgorod Region and the newspaper Nizhegorodskaya Pravda.

The project is NON-COMMERCIAL! Only production costs are covered (typesetting, illustration preparation, layout, printing). Due to funding difficulties, it has been decided to raise the necessary funds through subscriptions and partly from sponsors.

To keep costs down, the print run has been reduced to 300 copies!

Quality — sewn binding, hardcover, glossy paper insert — remains unchanged.

Subscriptions are taken out by distributing subscription forms to individuals and entering into agreements with legal entities (including editorial offices).

Attention! Bank details and account numbers for payments will be provided by email in response to applications submitted to the Union of Journalists or directly to the author.

Applications are accepted until the end of April 2010.

1. Discounted — 300 rubles, for journalists of Nizhny Novgorod Region.

2. Standard — 400 rubles (for legal entities, non-journalists, buyers from other regions).

3. Patron — 500 rubles (for those wishing to support the project).

The book "Nizhny Novgorod Press: A Concise Encyclopedia," 320 pages. Exclusive archival material. A detailed essay on the history of the Nizhny Novgorod press. Over 1,000 dictionary entries (newspapers, magazines, printing houses, key concepts and terms, etc.), including more than 800 biographies of Nizhny Novgorod journalists from the very beginning to the present day. More than 200 photographs.

The site covers the history of our region and the people who lived, live, and work here alongside us. Our region has a rich history that surrounds us everywhere; sometimes, in the rush to earn a living, we fail to notice the historical wealth that is all around us every minute of the day.

The idea for the site was conceived in 2003, and development began in 2004; at the end of 2008 it underwent a complete redesign, which you can now see for yourself.

The site contains a wealth of articles on the history of the city and the region, its architecture, and of course its residents — notable figures who both lived in and visited our city. All articles will be accompanied by a large number of photographs and animations.

The information business catalogue "Nizhny Novgorod Business Encyclopedia" presents an overview of the industrial potential and financial market of the most reliable, promising, effectively operating and developing production, commercial, and other entities of various forms of ownership and fields of activity.

Materials on the historical past and present state of the Nizhny Novgorod Governorate and Region have been carefully collected and published by various specialists, beginning with the well-known Nizhny Novgorod local historians N.I. Khramtsovsky and A.S. Gatsitsky.

There are many individual publications devoted to various aspects of life and activity in the Nizhny Novgorod land; however, to this day there exists no comprehensive, scholarly illustrated reference work presenting a systematic overview of all current knowledge about the Nizhny Novgorod Region — that is, a Nizhny Novgorod Encyclopedia.

The necessity of such a publication is beyond doubt from both a scholarly and a purely practical standpoint: the Nizhny Novgorod Encyclopedia is needed by schoolchildren, students, teachers, business people, all Nizhny Novgorod residents, and the many guests of our Region.

Work on creating the Nizhny Novgorod Encyclopedia was begun by the Nizhny Novgorod Encyclopedic Council, established by order of the Governor. That same order assigned responsibility for supporting the Council's activities and for preparing materials for the Nizhny Novgorod Encyclopedia to the Nizhny Novgorod Region Marketing Center.

Like any encyclopedia, our Nizhny Novgorod Encyclopedia will incorporate the work of scholars, local historians, archivists, and historians of science, technology, and culture — hundreds of people who carefully collect and preserve evidence of our history and present-day life.

The preparation of publications of this kind is an extremely labor-intensive and costly undertaking. The Russian state has always borne such costs, previously funding and continuing to fund today the activities of the state publishing house "Bolshaya Rossiyskaya Entsiklopediya" (Great Russian Encyclopedia). Nevertheless, being well aware of the Region's difficult budgetary situation, the Nizhny Novgorod Encyclopedic Council does not intend to finance the preparation and publication of the Nizhny Novgorod Encyclopedia exclusively from taxpayer funds. We are counting on real financial support from today's industrialists, entrepreneurs, bankers, and financiers, who will undoubtedly carry on the traditions of the distinguished Nizhny Novgorod patrons of the arts, whose sponsorship has always sustained Nizhny Novgorod science and culture.

In this regard, the Nizhny Novgorod Encyclopedic Council is appealing for sponsorship assistance in the preparation and publication of the Nizhny Novgorod Encyclopedia.
