The Nizhny Novgorod State Medical Academy (NGMA) is a higher medical educational institution in Nizhny Novgorod, founded on March 20, 1920.[1] During the Soviet period it was known as the Gorky Medical Institute named after S. M. Kirov (GMI), and later as the Nizhny Novgorod Medical Institute.[1] On February 2, 2018, it was reorganized into the Privolzhsky Research Medical University (PRMU).[1] Registered address: Nizhny Novgorod, Minin Square, building 10/1.[1]

History

The institution was founded on March 20, 1920; the formal opening ceremony took place on March 21, 1920.[1] During the Soviet period, the institute bore the name of S. M. Kirov and was located in The City of Gorky.[1] One of the academy's buildings stands on Minin and Pozharsky Square — in a building constructed in 1916 for the offices of the Steamship Company Volga'. Among the institution's graduates and staff is Academician Nikolai Nikolaevich Blokhin, the future president of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR, who delivered lectures to the institute's students. Among the academy's distinguished professors is Evgenia Pavlovna Kamysheva, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation, and academician of the Euro-Asian Academy of Medical Sciences. On February 2, 2018, the academy was reorganized into the Privolzhsky Research Medical University.[1] Since March 2, 2018, the rector of the university has been Nikolay Nikolaevich Karyakin — Doctor of Medical Sciences and neurosurgeon.[1]

Structure and Activities

PRMU provides training for qualified medical personnel, postgraduate education and professional development for physicians, as well as research and academic-methodological work.[1] The university comprises 7 institutes, 59 departments, and approximately 3,000 staff members, including 2 corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 150 doctors of science, and 360 candidates of science.[1] The university unites the following faculties: general medicine, pediatrics, preventive medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy, as well as faculties of networked educational programs, international medical education, continuing professional education, and advanced specialist training.[1] PRMU also houses the P. K. Anokhin House of Scientific Collaboration, which conducts scientific and educational outreach for pupils in grades 5–11.[1] The university enrolls more than 5,900 students (2020), of whom approximately 1,200 are citizens from 60 countries.[1]

Rankings

In the Forbes ranking of Russia's best universities, PRMU placed 89th in 2020 and rose to 54th in 2021, becoming third in the country among medical universities.[1] On April 27, 2022, the Times Higher Education (THE) agency published the THE 2022 University Impact Rankings, in which PRMU scored 42.7 out of 100 points within a group of 1,406 higher educational institutions worldwide (in 2021 it scored 32.5 points in a group of 1,117 universities).[1] According to the international SCImago-2022 ranking, among 8,084 research organizations worldwide PRMU ranks 695th, and 29th among Russian universities — ahead of all Nizhny Novgorod universities; in terms of social impact it ranks 248th in the world.[1] In 2022, the university was included in the international "Three University Missions" ranking (placing in the 801–900 range out of 1,800 universities worldwide), ranked 86th in the RAEX "100 Best Universities of Russia" ranking, and 11th in the RAEX subject ranking for Medicine.[1] In 2023, PRMU entered the top 10% of the world's best universities and ranked second among Russian medical universities (after Sechenov University) in the global aggregated best.edu ranking, which takes into account positions across 12 international and 2 Russian rankings.[1]
