Nizhny Novgorod Medical College (official name: State Budgetary Vocational Educational Institution of Nizhny Novgorod Region "Nizhny Novgorod Medical College", GBPOU NO NMK) is an active secondary vocational medical institution in Nizhny Novgorod, founded in 1920. The main building is located at 9 Pavla Mochalova Street (Sormovo, near Burevestnik metro station).[2] The College is positioned as one of the largest secondary vocational education institutions in Russia.[1]
History
The institution was founded in 1920 as an obstetrics technical school. It subsequently underwent a series of transformations: into a medical polytechnic (1931–1935), a paramedic-obstetrics school (1935–1954), and a medical vocational school (1954–1995). In 1995, the institution was granted college status.[1]
The first directors of the school were S. P. Dobrotin, M. F. Nemtsov, and G. V. Vinokurov. From 1942 to 1975, A. K. Mulyar served as director without interruption, under whose leadership a significant number of mid-level medical workers were trained. From 1975 to 1995, the institution was headed by T. M. Saltsev, Honored Teacher of the Russian Federation. In 1995–1996, the director was A. V. Razumovsky, Doctor of Medical Sciences, professor, under whom work on reforming nursing practice was carried out. From 1996 to 2014, the college was headed by V. P. Smirnov — People's Teacher of the Russian Federation, Doctor of Medical Sciences, professor, and academician of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences. In 2014, V. N. Grechko, Doctor of Medical Sciences, professor, and academician of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, was appointed director.[1]
In 2008, Nizhny Novgorod Medical School No. 2 and Nizhny Novgorod Medical School No. 3 were reorganized and merged into the college. By order of the Government of Nizhny Novgorod Region No. 2112-r dated October 16, 2013, Bogorodsk Medical College and Vetluga Medical School (technical school) were incorporated into the college as branches. Since 2016, the institution has borne its current official name.[1]
Structure and Programs
The college comprises three academic buildings in Nizhny Novgorod, a part-time (evening) department at the N. A. Semashko Nizhny Novgorod Regional Clinical Hospital, Vetluga and Bogorodsk, as well as branches at medical organizations in the region — in Pavlovo and Dzerzhinsk.[1]
The college enrolls more than 4,000 students across 9 programs: general medicine, obstetrics, nursing, preventive medicine, laboratory diagnostics, pharmacy, preventive dentistry, orthopedic dentistry, and medical massage — for persons with visual disabilities.[1] Six-month preparatory courses in Russian language, chemistry, and biology are offered for 9th-grade pupils.[2]
Academic and Research Activities
Students practice nursing skills on specialized mannequins; training simulators for future obstetricians and for resuscitation skills are also available.[2] The college has a student scientific society comprising subject-based clubs; students present papers at academic conferences.[1][2] A career and graduate employment center is in operation.[1]
