«Gidromash» (official name: Nizhny Novgorod Open Joint-Stock Company «Gidromash» named after V. I. Luzyanin) is a Nizhny Novgorod defense-industrial enterprise specializing in the manufacture of aviation assemblies and systems. It ranks among the leading suppliers of aviation products in Russia. The enterprise remains in operation to this day; it was named in honor of Vladimir Ilyich Luzyanin, the plant's long-serving director. The enterprise was founded in 1805 in Moscow by Pyotr Ilyich as a carriage workshop; in 1933 it was transferred to the authority of Glaviaviaprom and began designing and manufacturing landing gear for domestic aviation, and in 1941 it was evacuated from Moscow to Gorky. The enterprise's primary specialization is the development, manufacture, and testing of landing gear, hydraulic cylinders, and hydraulic assemblies for all types of aircraft.[1]

Authority

A long chapter in the enterprise's history is associated with Vladimir Ilyich Luzyanin — a prominent organizer of Nizhny Novgorod's defense production, Hero of Socialist Labor, State Prize laureate, academician of the International Academy of Informatization, and honorary doctor of the Nizhny Novgorod State Technical University. Luzyanin served as chairman of the board of directors of NOJSC «Gidromash» and also as president of the Nizhny Novgorod Association of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs.[1] Subsequently, the post of general director of the enterprise was assumed by Aleksandr Luzyanin — Vladimir Luzyanin's son.

Participation in aircraft manufacturing programs

«Gidromash» named after V. I. Luzyanin has been included in the production cooperation program for the medium-range passenger aircraft MC-21-310, together with other Nizhny Novgorod enterprises — the Sokol aircraft manufacturing plant, the Ruspolimet metallurgical plant, and the Polyot Research and Production Enterprise. The first flight of the first production fully import-substituted MC-21-310 took place on August 3, 2026, at the airfield of the Irkutsk Aviation Plant.

Other mentions

In the early 2000s, «Gidromash» was mentioned in materials related to a criminal case concerning the embezzlement of budget funds during the construction of the metro bridge across the Oka: according to investigators, the enterprise's debt to the Road Fund in respect of the road users' tax was used in a promissory-note mutual-settlement scheme organized by the general director of Stroymast LLC, Anton Averin. In this case, «Gidromash» acted not as an organizer but as one of the Nizhny Novgorod companies whose debt was drawn into the scheme.

In 1976, by decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, the enterprise's workforce was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor for the creation of new aviation technology; in 2005, on the occasion of the enterprise's 200th anniversary, it was honored with a Letter of Commendation from the President of the Russian Federation. In 1988, the landing gear for the Soviet reusable spacecraft Buran was designed and manufactured at «Gidromash»; in 1993, the enterprise jointly with the German firm MBB (Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm) won a tender for the development of landing gear for the European spacecraft Hermes. The enterprise has experience in international cooperation: it has manufactured landing gear components for Airbus, Embraer, and Bombardier aircraft and Leonardo helicopters, and since 1992 has maintained cooperation with the Liebherr group on the supply of assemblies for aviation and earthmoving equipment. As of the current date, the enterprise employs approximately 2,500 people, with an average employee age of 42.[1]
