Barthes in the first half of the 1970s in the context of the analysis of literary texts (“S/Z?”, “Textual Analysis of a Short Story by Edgar Allan Poe,” etc.). The fundamental idea behind T.A. is to combine poststructuralist approaches to the analysis of a text’s manifest structure, on the one hand, with a postmodernist conception of the text as a fundamentally astructural, rhizomorphic (see Rhizome, Nomadology) medium of meaning-generation: “In our research, two ideas that have long been considered mutually exclusive must be reconciled: the idea of structure and the idea of combinatorial infinity.” ..
