Nizhny Novgorod Technical Lyceum, NTL — a municipal educational institution, Lyceum No. 38 of the Sovetsky District of the city of Nizhny Novgorod.
A third-level educational institution with a natural science focus (advanced study of physics) and an expanded curriculum of specialized (technical) courses.
The Nature of the Institution
The lyceum was established in 1991 with the aim of providing city schoolchildren with a quality education to support their admission to institutions of higher learning and their subsequent studies there.
The institution offers conditions for study that align with students' professional interests and their intentions regarding the continuation of their education.
From 1991 to 1996 it operated as a regional experimental site for an innovative education system; from 1997 onward it has carried out its activities in a mode of stable operation and development.
Students are admitted to the 9th and 10th grades from among those most prepared for advanced-level programs who show an aptitude for the study of natural science and mathematics, drawn from various schools across the city.
It carries out its educational activities in partnership with:
- Polytech;
- Lobachevsky University;
- Nizhny Novgorod State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering;
- Volga State Academy of Water Transport.
History
For 14 years, the lyceum has successfully implemented specialized-track education, with the educational process built on the principle of connecting higher and secondary schooling. A total of 86 university instructors are involved in various forms of educational activity (specialized courses, students' academic research, olympiad preparation), including 15 holders of doctoral degrees and 41 candidates of science. To help students make an informed choice of future profession and acquire initial skills in it, the curriculum includes specialized courses reflecting the profile of the partner universities. Students' academic research under the supervision of university faculty is organized in two areas: defense of research papers at the relevant departments of the natural sciences and mathematics faculties of Lobachevsky University, and preparation for olympiads at various levels.
Specialized-track education requires a high level of teacher preparation. Of the lyceum's 36 teachers, 30 (83%) hold the highest qualification category, and 3 teachers hold the title of Honored Teacher of the Russian Federation. Lyceum Director Smirnov V.K. is an Honored Teacher of the Russian Federation, a laureate of the Nizhny Novgorod Prize, and a top-category administrator.
Over the years of the lyceum's existence, 13 graduating classes have been completed — 2,769 graduates in total. Every third or fourth graduate completes the lyceum with a gold or silver medal (732 people).
The primary outcome of the joint work of the lyceum and higher education institutions is the continuity of education and 100% enrollment of graduates in universities, with 96–97% enrolling in programs matching their area of study and 3–4% becoming students at other higher education institutions.
The lyceum has built a modern educational and material base: the computer science, physics, astronomy, history, and literature classrooms, as well as the offices of deputy directors, are connected to a local network providing access to regional Internet resources and to email (worldwide) from every computer, enabling effective organization of the educational process and extracurricular activities. Currently, 45 modern computers are in active use in the lyceum's educational practice, and electronic textbooks are widely employed. The lyceum is a full member of the All-Russian Academy of Creative Pedagogy.
The modern education system calls for an active transition to state-public governance. The lyceum's Board of Trustees operates successfully, addressing matters of organizing the educational and upbringing process and improving the lyceum's material and technical base. Under the Board of Trustees, the NTL Lyceum Development Support Fund has been established.

Lyceum No. 38 holds a prominent place in the educational landscape of the city of Nizhny Novgorod and the Nizhny Novgorod Region:

- multiple winner of the regional and All-Russian competitions "School of the Year";
- winner of the regional stage of the All-Russian competition "Best Schools of Russia" in the category "School of Professional Career";
- full member of the All-Russian Academy of Creative Pedagogy;
- holder of the honorary title "School of the Century";
- holder of the Certificate of Special Trust;
- absolute leader in the district stage of the All-Russian School Olympiad;
- leader in the city and region in the number of graduates awarded gold and silver medals: every third or fourth graduate is a medal recipient;
- center of student academic research activity: every third lyceum student is engaged in intellectual and creative work;
- center for holding socially significant events at the regional and city level;
- a key base site for the Department of Education and Social and Legal Protection of Children of the city of Nizhny Novgorod.
Currently, as part of implementing the principle of continuous education, enterprises of the city and region also serve as social partners of the lyceum: the program "lyceum – university – enterprise" has been developed, and Cooperation Agreements have been concluded with major enterprises — JSC Nizhnovenergo, JSC Hydromash, FSUE Polyot, and CJSC Resistor NN.
