Fyodor Aleksandrovich Seleznev is a Nizhny Novgorod historian, Doctor of Historical Sciences, and professor specializing in local studies and The History of Nizhny Novgorod. He works at the Institute of International Relations and World History (IMOMI) of Lobachevsky University — as a professor in the Department of Foreign Regional Studies and Local History and head of the Center for Local History Research.[1]

Academic and Public Activities

Seleznev serves on the dissertation council at Lobachevsky University and Ivanovo State University, and is a member of the Expert Council of the Higher Attestation Commission of the Russian Federation in history.[1] He heads the Nizhny Novgorod Local History Society society, sits on the board of the Union of Local Historians of Russia and on the Publishing Council of Nizhny Novgorod Region, and serves on the editorial board of the Bulletin of Ivanovo State University: Humanities. On Seleznev's initiative, the research center Nizhny Novgorod Encyclopedia was established.[2] He is also a member of the board of the Nizhny Novgorod Regional Organization of the Russian Society of Historians and Archivists, and curator of the section on Russian history and local studies at the Nizhny Novgorod City Non-State Educational Institution "Eureka".[2][1]

He publishes in leading Russian academic history journals — Rossiyskaya Istoriya, Voprosy Istorii, Vestnik Moskovskogo Universiteta, Vestnik Sankt-Peterburgskogo Universiteta, Istoricheskiy Arkhiv, and Slavyanovedenie. His Hirsch index in the Russian Science Citation Index is 12.[1] Among his scholarly works is an article on housing construction in Nizhny Novgorod in the first half of the 1930s, co-authored with Roman Kupryn, in which the authors analyze the Soviet model of urbanization through the lens of a specific historical city. In 2014, under Seleznev's academic editorship, a collection of articles was published entitled "World War I: A View from the 21st Century — Russia and Nizhny Novgorod Governorate in 1914–1918", produced with the participation of the Public Chamber of Nizhny Novgorod Region.[2] Among Seleznev's books are "On Rozhdestvenskaya Street and the Stroganov Church on It", "History of the Nizhny Novgorod Region from Ancient Times to the End of the 16th Century", A Popular History of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, and the monograph The Revolution of 1917 and the Struggle of Elites over the Question of a Separate Peace with Germany (1914–1918).[3][2]

As head of the IMOMI Center for Local History Research, Seleznev participates in discussions on current issues in Nizhny Novgorod history. In particular, he argued convincingly against the claim that a Bulgar city existed The Dyatlov Mountains before the founding of Nizhny Novgorod, pointing out that the relevant accounts trace back to Tatishchev's own historical reconstructions and are not corroborated by independent sources.[1]

Awards and Prizes

Seleznev has been a multiple laureate of the Nizhny Novgorod Prize: in local studies — in 2003 and 2012; in education — in 2018; and in literature — in 2021 (for the book History of Nizhny Novgorod).[1][2] In that same year of 2021, he was awarded the Nizhny Novgorod Region Prize named after Minin and Pozharsky.[1] By decree of the President of the Russian Federation dated 29 March 2021, he was awarded the jubilee medal "In Commemoration of the 800th Anniversary of Nizhny Novgorod."[1]

Among his other honors are the Certificate of Merit of the Ministry of Education of Nizhny Novgorod Region (2011), a Letter of Appreciation from the Ministry of Industry and Innovation of Nizhny Novgorod Region (2012), a Certificate of Merit from the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia (2015), a Letter of Appreciation from the Ministry of Culture of Nizhny Novgorod Region (2017), and a Letter of Appreciation from the Governor of Nizhny Novgorod Region (2019).[1]

Fyodor Aleksandrovich Seleznev was born on 18 December 1968 in Gorky (now Nizhny Novgorod); he graduated from a physics and mathematics school and then from the History Faculty of Lobachevsky University.[2]
