Origin of the Name
It is believed that, Nizhny Novgorod Woodpecker — the nickname of a pagan Mordvin, given to him because he was forced to work constantly with an axe to build dwellings for his family—consisting of eighteen wives and seventy sons—at the confluence of the Oka and Volga rivers.

Some local historians believe that the Dyatlov Hills were named for the large number of woodpeckers that are thought to have lived in the forests that once covered the right bank of the Oka River.
According to Nizhny Novgorod Woodpecker, the origin of the name is linked to the name Nizhny Novgorod Woodpecker, who lived in a mountain gorge near the mouth of the Oka River Osh Was Chosen. Skvorets, a Mordvin, lived in the same area; he was married to eighteen women, who bore him seventy children.
