Gorodetsky District is one of the largest districts of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, located in its central part. The district borders Balakhninsky District, Borsky District, Sokolskiy District, and Koverninsky District districts. The district contains the towns of Gorodets and Zavolzhye, the settlement of Pervomaysky, and 12 rural councils.
The administrative center of the district is the town of Gorodets.
Industry
The district's main industrial sectors are: automotive manufacturing, shipbuilding, and food production.
Gorodetsky District is among the districts of the Nizhny Novgorod Region with a highly developed industrial base.
In recognition of high production performance and the stable development of the district's agro-industrial complex, Gorodetsky District received the Honorary Standard of the Governor of Nizhny Novgorod Region in 2007. Twenty-one agricultural enterprises of various legal and organizational forms operate in Gorodetsky District, including: one state enterprise, two collective farms (kolkhozy), two open joint-stock companies (OAOs), one partnership on trust (TNV), three closed joint-stock companies (ZAOs), six limited liability companies (OOOs), and six agricultural production cooperatives (SPKs). The average number of employees at agricultural enterprises over the nine months of 2007 was 1,721 people.
Landmarks
Gorodets has left us a rich artistic heritage: wood carving — the so-called "deaf" house carving — the remarkable Gorodets painting tradition, and carved gingerbread boards that are true masterpieces of folk art. The district is home to the Vladimir Spring. Gorodetsky District also has several churches and the Fyodorovsky men's monastery.
