Pervomayskiy District is located in the south of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, right on the border with Mordovia. The administrative center is the city of Pervomaysk.
District Economy
The foundation of the district's economy is industry. It employs up to 50% of all workers in the district, produces up to 70% of gross output, and contributes approximately 80% of tax revenues to the local budget. The performance of industrial enterprises determines our lives today and in the future. Overall, the district's industry possesses considerable economic potential. There are highly qualified specialists — true professionals in their fields. There are competent managers capable of running operations effectively. What is needed today is investment to re-equip production facilities and introduce new technologies.
Despite its modest volume of industrial output, Pervomayskiy District is highly integrated into the Russian economy. Only one quarter of its products are sold within the Region; the rest are exported. Credit for this belongs to the only large enterprise in the area with long-established traditions — Pervomaysk JSC "Transpnevmatika." The enterprise is a budget-forming entity; its contribution to the local treasury amounts to up to 60%. The plant manufactures braking equipment for railway rolling stock: brake cylinders, compressors, connecting hoses, automatic adjusters, hydraulic dampers, and cast-iron products. As a monopolist in its sector, JSC "Transpnevmatika" has its own business philosophy, which consists of seeking new partners on both the Russian and foreign markets, reducing prices on its products, and drawing on international experience in developing its production management strategy and tactics.
Nature has generously endowed the district with forests. At present it is the only heavily forested district in the south of the Region. The abundance of large forest resources has driven the development of a forestry complex in the district, which includes joint-stock companies "Pervomayskiye Lesopromyshlenniki," "Les," and others engaged in timber processing. The main markets for forestry complex products are located well beyond the boundaries of the Nizhny Novgorod Region.
Points of Interest
Pervomayskiy District is home to a historic park — the Karamzin estate in the settlement of Rogozhka. At the center of the Rogozhka estate stands a one-hundred-and-fifty-year-old hospital: a two-story building, a small house that once housed a power station, a wooden izba (traditional wooden house), and a brick barn. All the buildings are set within an old park. The park contains five ponds — broad expanses of water surrounded by thick, hoary willows. On a peninsula there is a lawn, a semicircle of oak trees, and an orchard. The estate park is part of a hospital complex with a physiotherapy focus incorporating acupuncture and mud treatments, which contributes to its role as a health and wellness facility. The park also contains the burial site of the Karamzin spouses.
