Balakhninsky District is one of the most historically notable districts of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, located to the northwest of Nizhny Novgorod. The administrative center of the district is the city of Balakhna, known as the assembly point of the Nizhny Novgorod Militia.
Balakhninsky District contains many small settlements. Among them is the village of Shelyaukhova, where the district begins. This village is located 2 km from the city of Zavolzhye. Shelyaukhova has a remarkable church where both Orthodox Christians and Old Believers worship. The district borders the Volodarsky District, Chkalovsky District, and Gorodetsky District Districts of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, as well as the cities of Nizhny Novgorod and Dzerzhinsk.
