Chkalovsky District — the only district in Nizhny Novgorod Region situated on the right, elevated bank of the Gorky Reservoir. The administrative center of the district is the city of Chkalovsk.
Chkalovsky District borders Ivanovo Region, Volodarsky District, Balakhninsky District, Gorodetsky District, and Sokolsky Districts of Nizhny Novgorod Region.
History
The history of Chkalovsky District begins in the 12th century, with the founding of Vasilyeva Sloboda, named after a son of Yury Dolgoruky. In the 19th century, Vasilyeva Sloboda was a large market village renowned for its pottery trade.
With the development of steamship navigation on the Volga, workshops for the repair and construction of river vessels were established in Vasilyeva Sloboda; these later became the foundation for the building of a city and marked the beginning of industrialization in Chkalovsky District.
Vasilyeva Sloboda is the birthplace of the legendary aviator V. P. Chkalov, who was born on February 2, 1904. In his honor, Vasilyeva Sloboda was renamed the city of Chkalovsk in 1937.
