Vorsma — a town in Pavlovsky District, Nizhny Novgorod Region, Russian Federation. Founded in 1588. Located on the Kishma River (a tributary of the Oka), 62 km southwest of Nizhny Novgorod.
History of the town's foundation
The settlement of Vorsma has existed since at least the 16th century. The toponym is of Finno-Ugric origin and means "forest land." In 1926, Vorsma was granted the status of a workers' settlement, and in 1955 it became a town.
Crafts
From the 18th century onward, it became a significant center of leatherworking, soap-making, and, above all, metalworking trades. The production of knives, scissors, surgical instruments, cutlery, and edged weapons brought the town fame throughout the Russian Empire. Modern enterprises grew out of these historically established industries — a medical instruments plant and a folding-knife factory. Today the leader of the arms trade is the Saro Folding Knife Factory.
