Tonshaevsky District is the northernmost district and the one most remote from the regional capital. Tonshaevsky District borders Shakhunskiy District of Nizhny Novgorod Region and districts of Kirov Region.
The administrative center of the district is the settlement of Tonshaevo, located 293 km from Nizhny Novgorod.
Industry
Plants include a butter factory, a flax-processing plant, a radio cabinet factory, a bakery, a food processing facility, a forestry enterprise, and others.

"In a crimson field, a golden spruce with roots, and in the base — two silver wavy narrow bends, dexter and sinister, entwined by the roots of the spruce and filled on the sides and below with green."
