From the History
The administrative center of Tonshaevskiy District, the working settlement of Tonshaevo, received the status of a selo at the very end of the 18th century in connection with the construction of a church in the former Mari village of Tonshaykovo.
The population of these parts engaged in various trades, all of which, in one way or another, were connected with the forest and its processing. Since ancient times, pine, spruce, and fir were felled and floated down the rivers here. At present, forestry and timber harvesting remain among the principal occupations of the local population.
