Sovetsky District is located in the Upper Town of the city, on the border with forests. It borders the Prioksky and Nizhegorodsky districts of Nizhny Novgorod.
Overview
This district is home to several recreational areas, industrial plants, and research institutes. The largest Lobachevsky University in Nizhny Novgorod — Lobachevsky University — is located in Sovetsky District. Most of its buildings are situated on Gagarin Avenue (the Biology, Radio Engineering, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics faculties, as well as the Applied Mathematics and Computer Science faculty, libraries, museums, etc.). The district also has two swimming pools, a Palace, and the Oka Hotel. Sovetsky District has many general education schools (including a French lycée), kindergartens, and so on.
Sovetsky District is the youngest district of Nizhny Novgorod within its current boundaries. In 2010 it turns 40 years old.
History of Formation
Its history began in 1956, when a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR dated 8 May 1956 merged the Sverdlovsky, Voroshilovsky, and Zhdanovsky districts of the City of Gorky into a single entity — Sovetsky District. Only 14 years later, by a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR dated 9 December 1970, Nizhegorodsky District was separated from Sovetsky District, and the remaining part of Sovetsky District together with a portion of Prioksky District formed Sovetsky District within its new boundaries.
