Nur, the Nur Youth Movement (Arabic: "Light") — a youth organization under the auspices of the Regional National-Cultural Autonomy of Tatars of the Nizhny Novgorod Region.
Nature of the Phenomenon
The movement was organized in 2004 and until November 2005 operated under the name "Yashlyar" ("The Young"). It then began to unite not only Tatars but also representatives of other nationalities and was renamed "Nur."
History of the Movement
With the participation of Nur activists, the website Islam in Nizhny Novgorod was launched.
On March 27, 2004, a gathering of Muslim youth of the city took place in Nizhny Novgorod with the aim of organizing a Nizhny Novgorod youth movement. The founding conference was attended by students of the maktab "Ikhsan," the madrasa "Makhinur," students from Nizhny Novgorod universities, and representatives of various nationalities. Among the founders of the youth movement were DUMNO, the Nizhny Novgorod Islamic Madrasa "Makhinur," and the Regional National-Cultural Autonomy of Tatars of Nizhny Novgorod Region.
Those assembled formed an organizing committee of the youth movement consisting of 14 people: Galiya Minyazhetdinova, Elvira Arifulina, Timur Sharafutdinov, Eduard Ibragimov, Nikolay Ivanov, Khajimurad Salimgereyev, Renat Islyamov, Ravil Seyfetdinov, Ildar Tazinayev, Nurshat Sharafetdinov, Radik Yusupov, Dinara Fakhretdinova, Timur Fakhretdinov.
The movement's organizing committee defined the main goals and objectives of the new youth organization. The primary objective of the "Yashlyar" movement is to preserve the culture and traditions of the Muslim peoples living in the region.
The "Yashlyar" movement assists young Muslims with employment, cooperates with Tatar youth organizations in other regions and holds regular joint meetings, works with city media representatives, and maintains excellent friendly relations with representatives of the Christian and Jewish communities of the city.

In 2006, the "Yashlyar" youth society was renamed "NUR." On November 6, 2006, the First Youth Forum was held on the theme "The Role of Public Youth Organizations in the Life of Russia," dedicated to the movement's first year of activity. The forum discussed pressing issues facing contemporary youth.
Over its first year of existence, the movement held a wide variety of cultural and public events: Tatar evenings, Muslim youth gatherings, a Muslim fashion show, free courses for all interested in studying Islam as well as the Tatar and Arabic languages. The youth movement took an active part in organizing the Nizhny Novgorod Islamic Theater and organized excursions for movement members to Tatar villages of Nizhny Novgorod Region.
The NUR youth movement was a co-founder of the Internet publication of Nizhny Novgorod Tatars www.nizgar.ru.
An example of Muslim youth's readiness to participate in public and political life was the NUR youth movement's participation in a silent rally in memory of the Beslan tragedy in September 2005.
