"Improving the Environment"
Twice — in 2005 and 2007 — on the initiative of Nikolay Sataev, the Kanavino administration attempted to stock Meschera Lake with fish — crucian carp and perch specially caught in Dalnekonstantinovsky District.
As a result of this initiative, dubbed "Let's Help the River" by the administration, the fish failed to take hold in the largest lake in Nizhny Novgorod. The predictable odors that followed in the "Meschera Lake" microdistrict forced environmentalists to justify themselves for the officials' actions:
Elena Kolpakova, staff coordinator of the "Coordination Center at the Dront Eco-Center": "We had to refute any involvement of our movement in this ill-conceived populist stunt. And now it's happening again. We are convinced that this is a matter for the courts. The person responsible must finally answer for it and compensate for the damage caused."
The Point of the Work
It is worth noting that Nikolay Sataev works for society not for money. In May 2008, the head of the Kanavino District administration Sataev will be behind the wheel of the tractor. After the entrepreneurs filed suit, Nikolay Sataev reimbursed all damages resulting from his actions in an amount that reached the equivalent of a year's salary for an official of his level. When asked how he managed to pay so quickly, the district head said he had his relatives to thank for it.
