The Federal Research Center A. V. Gaponov-Grekhov Institute of Applied Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IAP RAS) is one of Russia's largest academic research centers, in operation since 1977. It was founded in Gorky on the basis of several departments of the Scientific Research Radiophysical Institute (NIRFI): ten departments, four laboratories, and one sector (620 staff members) were separated from NIRFI.[1] The institute's first director was A. V. Gaponov-Grekhov.[1] It is located in Nizhny Novgorod and currently has more than 1,000 employees.[1]

Research Areas

The institute's principal fields of research cover radiophysics, plasma physics, microwave electronics, hydrophysics, acoustics, nonlinear dynamics, laser physics, and nonlinear optics.[1] A plasma physics department has operated at the institute since its founding; from 1977 to 1988 it was headed by M. A. Miller, and for work in the field of nonlinear wave processes in plasma, M. A. Miller and his students were awarded the USSR State Prize in 1987.[1] The IAP RAS Crystal Growth Laboratory manufactures optical components for Russia's most powerful laser, currently under construction at the RFNC-VNIIEF in Sarov: crystals grown at the institute are used as frequency converters and optical shutters in the nuclear center's laser systems.[1] The Laboratory of Nonlinear Geophysical Processes studies natural wave phenomena, including tsunamis on inland bodies of water. IAP RAS scientists have created a three-dimensional numerical model of lightning initiation, reproducing the formation of a plasma structure (the lightning "embryo") at altitudes of six and nine kilometers; the study showed that lightning arises through the merging of numerous simultaneously existing streamer channels into extended conducting clusters that reach a critical length; the results of the work, supported by the Russian Science Foundation, are intended to be used to improve lightning protection methods.[2][1]

Structure and Leadership

Since 2017 the center's director has been G. G. Denisov; the scientific director is A. G. Litvak, a full member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and dean of the Higher School of General and Applied Physics at Lobachevsky University since 1991.[1] The institute's staff (excluding branches) includes 5 full members of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 7 corresponding members, and 5 RAS professors who are not RAS members.[1] A branch of IAP RAS is the Institute for Physics of Microstructures of the Russian Academy of Sciences, also located in Nizhny Novgorod.[1] The institute has its own IAP RAS Publishing House.[1]

Ties with the Research and Educational Community

IAP RAS involves its specialists in the public outreach activities of the Nizhny Novgorod Planetarium. IAP RAS is one of the venues for the popular-science festival "Living Books: Science in Situ", organized by Lobachevsky University: public events featuring institute staff are held at the institute's building at Bolshaya Pecherskaya Street, 31/9.[3][1] During his tenure as director, Academician Gaponov-Grekhov supervised the preparation of the "Natural Sciences and Technology" section as part of the sectoral Nizhny Novgorod encyclopedias project.[1] Among the institute's staff is N. F. Kovalev, a Russian Federation State Prize laureate and head of the Laboratory of High-Power Pulsed Microwave Radiation Sources.[1] The institute's official website is iapras.ru.[1]
