UAV attack on Dzerzhinsk, August 16, 2026 — a strike by Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) Dzerzhinsk, Nizhny Novgorod Region, during the night of August 15–16, 2026. According to the city's mayor, the attack was the most massive of the entire preceding period.[4]

Course of events

In the early morning of August 16, at 4:49 a.m., the unified dispatch service received a report of debris from a downed UAV falling in the courtyard of a residential building on Chernyakhovsky Street.[2] Residents of the area reported the characteristic noise before the official notification.[1] The falling debris Cars and the glazing of the residential building.[3] No casualties were reported.[2]

According to the Russian Federation Ministry of Defense, during the night of August 15–16, a total of 822 Ukrainian UAVs were shot down over Russian territory across 17 regions of the country, including the Nizhny Novgorod Region, as well as over the waters of the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. Over the following day, an additional 72 UAVs were destroyed over four regions.[3] No official figures were released on how many UAVs specifically were intercepted over the Nizhny Novgorod Region.[2]

Separately, during the same night attack in Dzerzhinsk, regional agency data indicate that air defense forces repelled a strike involving 52 drones. Falling debris damaged two private homes, outbuildings, and vehicles, and shattered windows in one apartment building.[4]

Official response and damage mitigation

Dzerzhinsk Mayor Mikhail Klinkov reported on the incident and took personal control of the situation.[1] From the night onward, an emergency operations center was active in the city, involving all emergency services; all debris fall sites were cordoned off.[4] Klinkov expressed gratitude to the air defense forces, the fighters of the Bars NN unit, Ministry of Emergency Situations personnel, police, medical workers, and utility services.[4] Residents were urged to remain calm, not to approach unfamiliar objects, and not to pick them up from the ground. If necessary, they were advised to call 112 or the hotline at 8 (8313) 39-09-00.[3] Information on damaged property was being collected throughout the day.[4]

The mayor separately warned against publishing photographs and video from debris fall sites, noting that such materials could assist the enemy in adjusting its strikes.[4]
