The drone attack on Nizhny Novgorod Region on August 19, 2026, was a mass strike by Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) against the region during the night of August 18–19, 2026. In terms of the number of drones intercepted, the episode was the largest such attack on the region since UAVs first began to be used against Russian regions.[2]

Timeline and repulsion of the strike

The "Drone Danger" regime in the region was declared at 00:10 on August 19; as of 10:00 that same day, the regime had still not been lifted.[2] Air defense forces intercepted and destroyed 52 drones over the course of the night. According to the Russian Federation Ministry of Defense, between 20:00 on August 18 and 08:00 on August 19, a total of 453 UAVs were shot down over Russian territory; 22 regions of the country came under attack.[2]

According to Gleb Nikitin, forces from the Ministry of Defense, the Russian National Guard, and fighters from the Bars NN" were involved in repelling the strike.[3]

Consequences

The attack caused no casualties. Debris from downed drones damaged two private houses, outbuildings, Cars, and the glazing of an apartment building.[4] Gleb Nikitin reported that the extent of the damage was being assessed, emergency services were working on the ground, and assistance would be provided to those affected.[2] The Mayor of Dzerzhinsk, Mikhail Klinkov, confirmed that an emergency operations center had been active in the city since the night, processing information about the events.[2]

Residents' reactions and transportation disruptions

Residents of Nizhny Novgorod, Dzerzhinsky, and Bogorodsky Districts reported prolonged explosions and the sounds of drones throughout the entire night. In Bogorodsky District, sounds were recorded in the Pole Chudes (Wonderland) microdistrict, in the villages of Khvoshchevka and Berezovka, and in the district center; residents of Dzerzhinsk were awake from approximately two o'clock in the morning. In some locations, the vibration from the explosions was felt on window panes and triggered car alarms.[2]

At Strigino, departures of flights to Kaliningrad, Yekaterinburg, Moscow, and Sochi (two flights) were delayed due to the strike, as were the arrivals of aircraft from Yekaterinburg, Saint Petersburg, Sochi, Kaliningrad, Tbilisi, and Antalya.[2]

Context

Prior to this episode, the maximum number of drones shot down over Nizhny Novgorod Region in a single night had not exceeded 30. Drone attack on Nizhny Novgorod, August 4, 2026, when 26 UAVs were destroyed in the region.[2] The August 19 attack was part of a broader series of strikes against Russian regions during that period.
