Football stadium for 40,000 spectators — a cancelled project to build a state-of-the-art stadium for Nizhny Novgorod's participation in the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The facility was proposed to be built in the Village within Nizhny Novgorod of Olgino (Prioksky District).
Background
A football stadium for 40,000 spectators will be built at the Rowing Canal in Nizhny Novgorod by 2017. This was announced by the Governor of Nizhny Novgorod Region Valery Shantsev on March 24 at a meeting with athletes and fans of the team.
As Dmitry Svatkovsky, the Nizhny Novgorod Region's Minister of Investment Policy, told NIA "Nizhny Novgorod", the stadium is planned to be multi-functional and will be used not only for major football matches but also for other large-scale sporting events and concerts.
Svatkovsky noted that the stadium project will be presented at the "EXPO-2010" exhibition in Shanghai (China) and at the "United Russia" forum. Previously, the stadium project had been presented at "MIPIM-2010" (Cannes, France). "Its presentation went well," Svatkovsky added.

"We believe our city will look even more beautiful from the Volga if a splendid stadium is placed in the area of the Rowing Canal," said D. Svatkovsky. According to him, the concept of locating the stadium specifically at the Rowing Canal has already received the approval of a number of foreign architects. |

It was previously reported that the head of Nizhny Novgorod Bulavinov had stated that the most sensible location for a stadium, should the 2018 FIFA World Cup be held in Russia, would be the site of the hippodrome (Prioksky District).
Before that, citing Deputy Governor of Nizhny Novgorod Region Gennady Suvorov, it was reported that if the 2018 FIFA World Cup were held in Russia, a new stadium in Nizhny Novgorod could be built in the area of Ankudinovskoe Highway.
