A "Manhattan on the Volga" will rise near Nizhny Novgorod, based on an Italian design
Nizhny Novgorod Region Governor Valery Shantsev has commissioned Italian architect Dante Benini to design "Globe Town," which will be built next to Nizhny Novgorod. The architect has already presented initial sketches. According to the project, the city will be a metropolis the size of Manhattan, the business center of New York. It is expected to be home to 500,000 people — not so much Nizhny Novgorod residents as migrants from other regions of Russia. .. The renderings of the future city's approximate appearance, presented by the eccentric (as the WSJ newspaper described him) architect Dante Oscar Benini, depict something between an alien world and a futuristic city from science fiction novels. At the center stands an enormous spherical building surrounded by three skyscrapers. According to the architect's concept, the city will resemble the modern business district of New York, with the Volga playing the role of the Hudson. .. According to the Wall Street Journal, the project budget amounts to $30 billion. No timeline for the project has been announced. The project's architects are Dante O. Nizhny Novgorod Governor Valery Shantsev has already held preliminary talks with Russian Federation Minister of Economic Development and Trade Elvira Nabiullina and Russian Federation Minister of Regional Development Dmitry Kozak, at which the "Russian Manhattan" project in Nizhny reportedly made a strong impression.
So strong, in fact, that — according to the Governor's press office — Shantsev managed to reach an agreement with the ministers on joint funding of engineering infrastructure and roads from both the regional and federal budgets. According to Alexander Bodrievsky, director of the Nizhny Novgorod Region's Department of Urban Development, the Glob-Town concept is expected to be finalized by 2009, after which investors and developers will be selected through a competitive process. The project as a whole is planned for completion between 2025 and 2030, with the first infrastructure construction work to begin in 2010. .. The project's client is the administration of Borsky District, and the development concept is being prepared by Nizhegorodkapstroy (a joint venture of the regional government and Moscow-based group SU-155) and the Italo-British firm Dante O. Benini & Partners Architects. This will be the largest development project in the region. According to official information from the regional government, investment in the Globe Town project — which envisions the construction of approximately 20 million square meters of residential and commercial real estate — is expected to total around 100 billion dollars. |
