The celebration of Nizhny Novgorod's 805th anniversary took place on August 15, 2026. Festivities were held at six city venues under the shared theme "A City That Brings People Together."[2]

Program and Venues

Shalabayev Yuri announced the parameters of the celebration on August 8, 2026: compared to previous years, the number of venues was reduced to six and the number of invited headline performers to two artists. The decision was justified by austerity measures while preserving the holiday itself.[1] The main events took place at Minin Square, with additional events held in Shveytsariya Park, Svetloyarsky Park, Dubki Park, May Day Park, and Avtozavodsky Park. Most venues operated from 12:00 to 22:00; celebrations The Kremlin concluded at 21:30.[2]

The program included patriotic zones, exhibitions of modern weaponry, meetings with participants of the special military operation, master classes in traditional Volga Region crafts, folk games, round dances, and performances by children's bloggers as part of the main concert at Minin Square.[2] On the evening of August 15, Oleg Gazmanov performed at Minin and Pozharsky Square (starting at 20:30), while Sergey Galanin and the rock band SeryGA performed at Shveytsariya Park (starting at 21:00).[2] There was no fireworks display that day — as had also been the case the year before.[4]

Running alongside the celebrations, from August 13 to 16, the city hosted the hot-air balloon festival Privolzhskaya Fiesta and the Volga Regatta 2026.[1] An art installation reading "805" was erected on Theatre Square.

Context and Official Position

Announcing the celebration in his Maks-channel, Shalabayev stressed that canceling City Day under austerity conditions would be "a grave mistake": "Nizhny Novgorod is a city that brings people together." An expanded patriotic component was described as an integral part of the festivities.[3] Gleb Nikitin and Igor Komarov congratulated Nizhny Novgorod residents on the anniversary.
