Igor Anatolyevich Komarov is a statesman serving as the Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy to the Volga Federal District. Before his appointment as envoy, Komarov held a number of senior management positions: from 2009 to 2013 he headed AvtoVAZ, from 2014 to 2015 he led the United Rocket and Space Corporation, and from January 2015 to May 2018 he served as Director General of the state corporation Roscosmos.[5] He was born on 25 May 1964 in the city of Engels, Saratov Region, and in 1986 graduated from the Economics Faculty of Lomonosov Moscow State University.[4] In his current role he regularly participates in significant events affecting the Nizhny Novgorod Region and other regions of the district.

Activity in the Nizhny Novgorod Region

In his capacity as the President's Plenipotentiary Envoy to the Volga Federal District, Igor Komarov takes part in major religious and public celebrations across the district. On 1 August 2026 he attended the festive services marking the feast day of St. Seraphim of Sarov at the Holy Trinity Seraphim-Diveevo Convent, where the Divine Liturgy in the open air was celebrated by Patriarch Kirill.[1] Joining Komarov at the celebrations were Gleb Nikitin, Head of the Republic of Mordovia Artyom Zdunov, Lyulin, and Metropolitan George.[1]

Around 7,500 worshippers gathered on the Monastery Square that day. The year 2026 was a jubilee year for the Diveevo convent: celebrations marked the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Mill Community, the 35th anniversary of the second discovery of the relics of St. Seraphim of Sarov, and the 35th anniversary of the restoration of monastic life at the convent.[2]

Position on Spiritual Matters

During the visit to Diveevo, the envoy met with Patriarch Kirill, Governor Gleb Nikitin, and Metropolitan George.[3] Komarov described the Seraphim-Diveevo Convent as a source of kindness and love for humanity, a stronghold of spiritual strength and traditional values, and called the visits of the head of the Russian Orthodox Church to the regions of the district significant events.[1] The envoy also shared his impressions from conversations with researchers working in Sarov, saying that among specialists deeply engaged in research there are no non-believers. Patriarch Kirill echoed this view, remarking: "True knowledge brings one closer to God; deficient knowledge leads one away from God." Based on the results for May–June 2026, the Nizhny Novgorod expert community ranked Komarov in second place (171 points) in the rating of professional activity and political influence of Nizhny Novgorod figures — level with First Deputy Governor of the Nizhny Novgorod Region Andrey Gneushev; first place was taken by Governor Gleb Nikitin (208 points).[6][1]
