The art installation "805" is a temporary urban installation set up on 3 August 2026 at Theatre Square (near the building of Drama Theater, on the side facing Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street) ahead of the celebrations marking the 805th anniversary of Nizhny Novgorod.[1] The installation is planned to remain on display until 8 November 2026.[2]
Description
The installation takes the form of a stylized numeral "805" set within an interweaving of two streams that converge into a single line.[1] The artistic device alludes to one of the defining features of the city's landscape — the confluence of the Volga and the Oka at the foot of Nizhny Novgorod.[2] The structure is 5.5 metres wide and 184 centimetres tall.[3] In the evening the installation is equipped with coloured lighting.[4]
Installation context
The city's birthday in 2026 falls on 15 August. The installation was conceived as a photo opportunity and one of the visual symbols of the anniversary celebrations.[2] According to the Nizhny Novgorod Department of Culture, the art installation is intended not only to adorn the city's main pedestrian street but also to serve as a photo spot for residents and visitors.[5] Information about the installation was distributed by City Hall; Oleg Berkovich had previously announced that festive venues would be organized in different districts of the city.[1] At the time the installation was put in place, the programme of events for the 805th anniversary of Nizhny Novgorod was expected to be presented shortly after 3 August 2026.[6] Alongside the art installation, eleven display boards featuring works by the winners of the children's drawing competition "A City That Unites" were placed along Bolshaya Pokrovskaya.[3]
