Vyksunsky District is located in the southwest of the Nizhny Novgorod Region in the basin of the Oka River and borders Ryazan Region to the south and Vladimir Region to the west. To the north and northeast, the district borders Navashinskiy District and Kulebakskiy District Districts. To the east and southeast — Ardatovsky District and Voznesenskiy District Districts.
The administrative center of the district is the Vyksa.
As of late July to early August 2010, Vyksunsky District was engulfed by the largest fire in Europe.
By July 28, the active burning area of the forest fire in Vyksunsky District was 820 hectares. As of 07:00, the area swept by fire totaled 12,000 hectares, of which 7,600 hectares were forest (including 5,200 hectares of controlled burns), and 4,400 hectares were wetlands.
Geographic location
Vyksunsky District is located in the Priokskaya lowland and is part of the Prioksky southwestern lowland Polesye region. Its area is 184,300 hectares. The permanent population as of January 1, 2007 was 87,400 people, of whom 58,300 live in the city of Vyksa. Population density is 47 people per square kilometer.
The distance from the city of Vyksa to the regional center — the city of Nizhny Novgorod — by highway is 186 km; the nearest railway station, Navashino, is 28 km from the district center.
Vyksunsky District has 46 inhabited localities.
Industry
The district's industries include ferrous metallurgy, machine building and metalworking, building materials manufacturing, timber and woodworking, as well as light and food industries. The city's enterprises in these sectors include:

The Vyksa Metallurgical Plant is the largest enterprise in the city of Vyksa.
The plant's territory covers more than 400 hectares in the northwestern part of the city. The VMP comprises the following production units: an open-hearth shop with three open-hearth furnaces with a capacity of 250 tonnes each, specializing in the smelting of wheel steel; a wheel-rolling shop for the production of railway wheels; a pipe production facility; and a block of consumer goods shops (a fork-rolling shop, a skate shop, and a bed-frame shop).
The Crushing and Grinding Equipment Plant (DRO) is the second largest enterprise in the city of Vyksa. "Drobmash" is among those industrial enterprises that were established in Nizhny Novgorod Region during the first five-year plan. The plant's primary production shops are: mechanical assembly, tool and die, steel foundry, thermal press, forge and press, and final assembly. Support shops include: electrical repair, power, gas, water supply, instrumentation and control, molding, motor transport, and cast iron foundry. The main product is crushing and grinding machinery.
Doschatinskoye Medical Equipment Plant (DZMO). The plant was founded in 1935. It is located in the workers' settlement of Doschatoye. Its grounds cover 11 hectares. Raw materials used include: lumber, hardware, plastics, rubber, wrapping paper, silver paint, foam rubber, and plastic. Products include: operating tables, various medical chairs, sterilization boxes, a range of beds, dental clinic equipment, and more.
