The Volzhsky Engineering and Pedagogical University is a Nizhny Novgorod higher education institution specializing in the training of engineering and pedagogical personnel. At various points in its history it was known as the Volga Engineering and Pedagogical University and the Volzhskaya State Engineering and Pedagogical Academy before attaining university status.[1] The university traces its history to 1967: in 2007 it marked its 40th anniversary. It has come a long way from being a branch of the All-Union Institute for the Advanced Training of Vocational and Technical Education Workers to becoming a leading academic and research center for engineering and pedagogical education.[1] The university is the only specialized institution of engineering and pedagogical profile located in the European part of the Russian Federation, and since 2002 has consistently ranked 5th–6th in the Pedagogical University.[1] The university's buildings are located in Nizhny Novgorod on Lunacharsky Street and on Chelyuskintsev Street.[1] The university's structure includes six institutes: the Institute of Pre-University Preparation, the Automotive Institute, the Institute of Design, the Professional and Pedagogical Institute, the Socio-Economic Institute, and the Institute for Advanced Training and Personnel Retraining.[1] The university enrolls more than 5,000 students and learners, as well as 228 doctoral candidates, postgraduate students, and degree-seeking applicants.[1]

History and Statuses

The institution passed through every successive stage of the Russian higher education system: institute — academy — university. It operated as an institute from at least 1993: it was then that Albina Aleksandrovna Chervova became Vice-Rector for Research at the Volzhsky State Engineering and Pedagogical Institute.[2] The institution was subsequently renamed the Volzhskaya State Engineering and Pedagogical Academy, where, among others, Vera Rostislavovna Popova worked, having previously taught at the Nizhny Novgorod Pedagogical College and the Kvarts Educational and Personnel Center. Vladimir Ivanovich Soldatenkov graduated from the academy in 2003 with a specialization in management.

Academic and Teaching Activities

A number of Nizhny Novgorod scholars and specialists are associated with the university. Albina Aleksandrovna Chervova (born February 6, 1941) — Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor, and Honored Worker of Higher Education of the Russian Federation — headed the Vice-Rectorate for Research as far back as the institution's time as an institute.[2] Yuri Nikolaevich Petrov, laureate of the A. G. Nebolsin Prize and holder of the Veteran of Labor medal, an honorary certificate from the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation (2009), an honorary certificate from the Governor of Nizhny Novgorod Region, and the honorary title of Honored Worker of Higher Professional Education of the Russian Federation, is also mentioned among persons associated with the university. Among the university's graduates is Evgeniya Vasilyevna Dronova (Gorky), who graduated with a specialization in Economics and Management in Mechanical Engineering Enterprises and subsequently became Deputy Head of the Administration of the city of Ivanovo.[2]
