«Volga Arena» is a multipurpose ice palace on Strelka (nnov.ec) in Nizhny Novgorod, constructed between July 2022 and 2026. It is the largest artificial-ice facility in the Nizhny Novgorod Region and the new home venue of Torpedo Hockey Club.[3]

Construction and Specifications

Construction ran from July 2022; the main work was completed in March 2026. Over two thousand workers and 60 pieces of specialized equipment were employed on site during construction.[6][2] The project was carried out by LLC «Ledovyy Dvorets», a subsidiary of Nizhny Novgorod Region Development Corporation. The cost of the concession grew from approximately 15 billion to 25.2 billion rubles over the construction period.[3] Under one roof the complex houses three ice surfaces: a main arena seating over 12,000 spectators and two practice rinks. The arena's infrastructure can accommodate up to 13 teams simultaneously: each locker room is a self-contained unit with coaches' offices, medical and massage rooms, and showers. The Torpedo hockey club's locker room has no columns, covers more than 150 square meters, and provides a clear sightline to every player.[6] The total floor area of the building is 70,000 square meters; the small ice arena seats 200 spectators.[5] The capacity of the main arena is twice that of the Sports Palace on Gagarin Avenue.[3]

Opening and Hockey Events

Nizhny Novgorod's Torpedo played the first pre-season match at the new arena on 14 August 2026, facing Moscow's Dynamo — with no spectators present.[3] On 7 September 2026, a test match featuring Chayka was held at the arena.[1] Torpedo's first full home game of the 2026/2027 season was a match against Kazan's Ak Bars on 14 September 2026. At the request of HC Torpedo's management, the KHL drew up the 2026/2027 season schedule so that the club would play its first four games away — pending the new arena's certification for league competition.[7][1] Deputy Governor Oleg Berkovich noted that the venue is in high demand among organizers of various events, but hockey matches remain its primary focus.[1]

Concert Activity

The first non-hockey concert event at the arena was a performance by singer Yegor Krid, scheduled for 26 October 2026.[1] According to the portal gipernn.ru, Krid may have been the first performer to appear at the new venue in a concert format.[3]

The arena is located at Strelka, between football stadium Sovkombank Arena and the Cathedral of Alexander Nevsky; the official address of the facility is Strelka Street, 11.[4]
