Ice Arena at the Site of the Rossiya Cinema — a planned indoor sports facility in Leninsky District of Nizhny Novgorod, to be built as part of a comprehensive development project at the intersection of Lenin Avenue and Zarechny Boulevard. The project was approved in 2026; completion is scheduled for May 30, 2031.[1]

The Project and Its Context

In early 2026, City Hall an agreement with Karo-Film LLC for a comprehensive territory development (CTD) covering an area of 1.74 hectares.[3] In August 2026, the project documentation prepared by Geoproekt-NN LLC was submitted for public consultation, which ran until August 17.[1][2] According to the documentation, the site plan calls for the demolition of the Rossiya Cinema building (constructed in 1969, closed in 2021) and the construction of two new facilities: a 25-story residential building and a covered ice arena.[1]

Arena Specifications

The ice arena is designed as a two-story building situated closer to Lenin Avenue. According to various sources, its floor area will be approximately 3,900–4,070 sq. m.[1][2] The facility is intended for public skating, hockey, figure skating, and speed skating.[1] A 17-space parking lot is planned adjacent to the arena.[3]

Implementation Phases and Timeline

Development of the site is divided into sequential phases. Before demolition of the cinema can begin, two prerequisites must be met: completion of emergency repair works on the Rzhavka hydraulic tunnels on Zarechny Boulevard (contractor — Nizhegorodspetsgidrostroy LLC, deadline — November 30, 2026) and commissioning of the Zarechnaya cable car station (scheduled for July 9, 2027).[3] Demolition of the cinema building is planned for before the end of 2027.[1] Once the site is cleared and utility networks are reconstructed, the developer will proceed with construction of the residential building and the ice arena; the maximum completion date for the entire complex is May 30, 2031.[1][2]

In addition to the arena and the residential building, the project includes the construction of 265 m of internal access roads, 1,475 m of footpaths, a 170 m cycle lane, children's and sports facilities, recreation areas, and bicycle and scooter parking, as well as reconstruction of heating networks and stormwater drainage.[1][3]
