United Russia members Nikolay Valuev and Boris Moiseyev. "A true artist should not play politics. But for an artist to live quietly and peacefully, he naturally needs to belong to some serious party. "

United Russia members (Yedrosy, Edinorosy) — members of the ruling all-Russian party "United Russia".

Their number in the Nizhny Novgorod Region as of 1 August 2010 stands at 38,836 people.

The nature of the phenomenon

Given that United Russia is the party of power, joining it is the honorable duty of every official and the natural choice for people who directly link the effectiveness of their work to the goodwill of state structures (such as military personnel, public-sector employees, entertainers, and athletes). United Russia and its affiliated organizations serve in modern Russia as a "social elevator": belonging to the structure that dominates the social landscape allows individuals who lack particular vitality, appeal, or intellect — and therefore have little in the way of career prospects outside what is known as the nomenclature or the "party-and-bed track" — to substantially strengthen their position within it.

A word from the experts

« The phrase uttered by a delegate from Dagestan — "Vladimir Vladimirovich, we adore you..." — is not merely an expression of Eastern courtesy or an attempt at sycophancy. It is a visible manifestation of the fact that Putin is not simply an outstanding domestic statesman, but also a powerful Systemic Integrator.

Just as streams merge in a mountain river, so too do faith in Russia's victory, cold and sober calculation, and the openness and compassion characteristic of the Russian person merge in Putin in an unfathomable, utterly mystical way. It is precisely this alloy that attracts and captivates the Caucasus. For it is in the Caucasus that society is in many ways devoted to traditional moral norms, within which a leader is not only — or even primarily — a hired manager, but also the bearer of sacred Power, the embodiment of Supreme Justice. And Putin fits this role perfectly.

..

It is very hard for Putin: like Atlas, he bears the vault of heaven above Russia upon his shoulders. Like a motherboard, he unites countless social chains and networks, social processors and cards. The natural extension of Putin is the party United Russia, which is in essence the finest and most complex instrument of feedback between society and power — a system of sensors that provides information and signals for decision-making.

..

In every newly built school, in every new library, in every restored museum, in every local enterprise built with the support of the federal center, there is a particle of Putin, a portion of the wisdom and astonishing foresight of this Great Leader of a Great Country.

In the press

« Advertising for Esquire magazine — featuring interviews with Bondarchuk, Butman, Volochkova, Menshov, Moiseyev, and other members of the party of power — disappeared under threats from security forces.

As Esquire editor-in-chief Filipp Bakhtin told NEWSru.com, the advertising banner on Sushchevsky Val was put up on Monday. By Tuesday afternoon it had been taken down. The magazine's own staff noticed this. A bystander also photographed what was happening, as a result of which the news made its way through the Adme website into the blogosphere, where it began to be discussed.

Bakhtin explained that the banner had been placed by the outdoor advertising agency Sunlight Outdoor, which has so far refused to explain its actions. There are no official responses; however, in informal verbal conversations, the advertising executives — according to Bakhtin — cite a complaint from certain security structures. The security office is located either in that building or the one next door. These individuals ultimately contacted the agency and threatened to ban not only Esquire's advertising but advertising on that particular surface altogether.

OpenSpace.ru, 30.03.2010, "Esquire Advertisement Torn Down": "Officially, they (representatives of Sunlight Outdoor — OS) have not yet explained their actions in any way," said Filipp Bakhtin. "From private conversations it follows that somewhere near the building where the poster was hanging there is some kind of security structure. Someone from there called the company and threatened to strip it of that advertising surface." The security structure is indeed located in the neighboring building at ul. Obraztsova, no. 38. It is called the FSUE NTC "Atlas" of the FSB of Russia and, according to its website, is engaged in "meeting the need for new technical means of the special communications support service." — Editor's note, K.ru

Internet users' opinions

« In a Skype conversation with mr_amadeo we discussed what it means to be a member of UR. He came up with a formula that, in my view, ought to be mass-produced and sent out into the world: there are three qualities, one of which is necessarily superfluous — brains, conscience, and United Russia membership.
