Spasskaya Street — a straight street, perpendicular to Minin Street and Bolshaya Pecherskaya Street Street, running from the Otkos to the bluffs of Kovalikha Ravine. It was planned in 1770 but remained unbuilt for a long time due to "inconveniences" and the ruggedness of the terrain. Only after the decision was made to erect the Spassky Cathedral at its intersection with Zhukovskaya Street — as part of A. A. Betancourt and V. I. Geste's 1824 plan for Nizhny Novgorod — was the square previously projected here, with chamfered inward corners of the blocks, converted into a rectangular one. The street was named Spasskaya and extended with a bend as far as the earthen rampart that enclosed the city's territory (now Gorky Street). Under the new confirmed plan of 1839, the street was straightened and driven beyond Polevaya Street (now Gorky Street) toward the relocated city boundary, which had been moved to the common pasture land near the brick factories.
