Sosnovsky District is located in the southwest of the Nizhny Novgorod Region and borders Pavlovsky District, Dalnekonstantinovsky District, Bogorodsky District, Arzamassky District, Ardatovsky District, Navashinskiy District, and Vachsky District Districts.
The administrative center is the workers' settlement of Sosnovskoe.
History of the District
Until 1929, the Sosnovskaya volost of Gorbatovsky Uyezd existed. As an administrative unit, Sosnovsky District was established in 1935 (by separation from Pavlovsky District) with its center in the urban-type settlement of Sosnovskoe. In 1938 the settlement was granted the status of a workers' settlement.
Sosnovskoe itself was founded in the 16th century. Most agricultural crops common to central Russia are cultivated in this area. The continental climate limits the agricultural season, so the local inhabitants have long engaged in trades and crafts. In ten of the thirteen villages of Sosnovskaya volost in the 19th century, metalworking was the primary occupation of the residents. High-quality files made from English and German steel were awarded an Honorable Mention at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1889. In 1916, the first artel was organized by Sosnovskoe craftsmen.
In 1918, all factories in the district were nationalized. With the start of the NEP, private enterprise and artel activity revived in Sosnovsky District. In the mid-1950s, private enterprise was abolished and resumed only at the beginning of the 1990s. The transition of the district's infrastructure to market economic conditions hardly changed the sectoral proportions of the local economy or its specialization.
