Scherbinki (archaic: Novtsy) — a microdistrict in the southern part of the Prioksky District of Nizhny Novgorod, and a street of the same name.
Also known as Scherbinki-1: Scherbinki-2 is a residential district and city outskirt, entirely built up with prefabricated panel high-rises, and the terminal stop for public transport.
There was formerly a village here on the "Arzamas Road" (highway).
History of the name
The old name — Novtsy — is recorded in chronicle references to a battle that took place here in 1171 between the Mordva and the forces of Mstislav, son of Prince Andrei Bogolyubsky, in which the prince was defeated.
Novtsy is a typical Russian place name for a location that had been settled or ploughed very recently.
The second, later name (Scherbinki) was explained by the potholes (shcherbiny) in the road through this area. The village was incorporated into the city in 1947. Today Scherbinki is a large microdistrict; the private housing has been entirely demolished and replaced by multi-storey apartment buildings.
