History
The history of the founding of Shatkovsky District stretches back into the distant past. As early as 1583, Shatki is officially mentioned in the Arzamas Estate Acts. The army of Ivan the Terrible passed through the territory of the modern Shatkovsky District on its way to Kazan. The defeat of the Kazan Khanate led to the expansion of the borders of the Russian state. A border guard service was established, and the Arzamas fortress, protected by an abatis line, became the military and administrative center of the southern part of the Nizhny Novgorod region.
Entry into Arzamas from the south was possible through the Sobakinskie and Shatkovskie gates. From this time, the settlement of these lands by Russians began. New settlements were established. Initially, the life of the population of the Shatki region was closely tied to the forest — specifically to woodworking. Gradually, agriculture, beekeeping, cattle breeding, and milling developed.
Shatkovsky District of the Arzamas Uyezd of Nizhny Novgorod Region, with its center in Shatki, was established in 1929 by a decree of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee "On the Composition of the Okrugs and Districts of Nizhny Novgorod Region and Their Centers."
