Shantsev's Blog, first version, first entry

Shantsev's Blog — a weekly-updated section of the personal Shantsev Net, covering the personal preferences and merits of Valery Shantsev.

It was commissioned through a tender using funds from the Nizhny Novgorod budget and cost several million rubles.

The Nature of the Phenomenon

A website featuring stories by the Nizhny Novgorod governor — an internet project created to counter the site Shantsev Net.

After the initial funds for development and content creation had been spent, the site Shanzev.ru and its blog were shut down, and a new site, Shantsev-vp.ru, was launched with a new blogging system — cross-posting entries to LiveJournal.

Reason for Existence

The original version of the blog was essentially a collection of the most loyally obsequious texts produced in the Nizhny Novgorod Region, written by its most seasoned servants — and in that sense serves as a model of exactly how one must act to earn Valery Shantsev's approval.

The second version of the blog was presumably intended to distance itself from that tendency.

Useful Activity

As with the film Tsar, this cultural project — which might seem to have every chance of passing unnoticed by the internet audience — nevertheless fully deserves that attention.

Observers may here witness a state leader's search for his own personal identity, unsullied by any later cultural influences.

And the comments on the governor's statements are nothing other than letters to "grandfather in the village," vividly sketching the regional information landscape and the behavior of those in proximity to journalism.

« 29.12.09 Experienced politicians understand that the global information network brings with it equally global social changes. Direct communication between the authorities and the public via the Internet is becoming the norm of an effective governance model. Moreover, it is the only working means of communication with young people and the so-called "creative class" — those segments of society who will be tasked with putting the President's call for Russia's modernization into practice. It is gratifying that the Nizhny Novgorod Region is keeping pace with contemporary socio-political trends.

Text of the Opening Entry

Blog 12.12.2009

Dear friends! Today my website on the internet is launched.

On this website you can find information about my work as Governor of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, as well as personal information: about my family, my hobbies, and my favorite places in our Nizhny Novgorod Region.

Of course, members of the Government and I, as Governor, do hold in-person meetings, and I often meet with the public. I will continue to meet with people more frequently and hold more of these meetings, but it would be right, in our modern age of information technology development, to use all the possibilities of the internet in order to establish a more dynamic two-way connection between myself, as Governor, and the people of the Nizhny Novgorod Region. I think that in this way we could discuss the problems that exist in our region; you could submit suggestions on how to improve quality of life, raise the standard of living, and resolve your own questions and problems. And of course, I would like to hear criticism from you as well. For one simple reason: despite my outward appearance, which can sometimes seem serious and somber, I love people, I love to debate, I love to receive information from specialists, because without professionals it is impossible to make the right decision. And, as a rule, only people who are not indifferent — who want the region to develop dynamically, for issues to be resolved, for living standards to rise — are the ones who argue, ask questions, and sometimes put forward proposals that differ from the point of view of the person they are listening to and watching, in this case meaning myself. And I will be extremely grateful and glad if we can establish such a relationship.

I will update all the information in my blog on a weekly basis. So I am not saying goodbye. Until we meet again, all the very best to you.

Governor of the Nizhny Novgorod Region Valery Shantsev
