The Seraphim Celebrations of 2026 were festive religious services and official events held on 1 August 2026 at the Diveyevo Monastery in the Nizhny Novgorod Region, on the feast day of the Venerable Seraphim of Sarov. The celebrations were timed to coincide with several anniversary dates of the monastery and were held on a particularly grand scale: the Divine Liturgy was led by Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, and approximately 7,500 worshippers who had come from across the country gathered on the Monastery Square.[1]

Commemorative Dates

The year 2026 was a special one for the Diveevo Monastery: the celebrations marked three anniversaries at once — the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Mill Community, the 35th anniversary of the second finding of the relics of the Venerable Seraphim of Sarov, and the 35th anniversary of the restoration of monastic life at the monastery.[1] Gleb Nikitin noted that year after year thousands of pilgrims flock to Diveevo on this date, and that the presence of the Patriarch each time serves as a reminder of the exceptional significance of the monastery and of Saint Seraphim for the entire Christian world.[1]

The Service and Ceremony

The Divine Liturgy was held in the open air on the square in front of the Transfiguration Cathedral, at the shrine containing the relics of the Venerable Seraphim of Sarov.[2] The celebrations were attended by the Presidential Plenipotentiary Representative to the Volga Federal District, Igor Komarov, the Governor Gleb Nikitin, the Head of the Republic of Mordovia Artyom Zdunov, Lyulin, Metropolitan George, members of the clergy, parishioners, and guests of the monastery.[2]

After the Liturgy, Patriarch Kirill presented the monastery with a gift of an icon of the chief apostles Peter and Paul, and also conferred ecclesiastical awards upon the Archbishop of Nizhny Novgorod and Arzamas George, Sergia (Konkova)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))), and the nuns of the Diveevo Monastery.[1] In his address to the faithful, the Patriarch emphasized the role of the Venerable Seraphim in the preservation of faith: "The Venerable Seraphim became a saint pleasing to God for our land and our people in difficult times. Drawing on his spiritual strength, our people were able to overcome those trials and temptations which at another time might have destroyed faith and spiritual life."[2]

Meetings and Cluster Development

As part of Patriarch Kirill's Primatial Visit to the The Diocese of Nizhny Novgorod and Arzamas, he held a meeting with Igor Komarov, Gleb Nikitin, and Archbishop George.[3] Komarov described the Seraphim-Diveevo Monastery as a source of kindness and love of humanity, a stronghold of spiritual strength and traditional values, and also shared his impressions from conversations with city of Sarov, remarking that among specialists who are deeply engaged in research there are no unbelieving people. The Patriarch echoed this sentiment with the words: "True knowledge brings one closer to God; flawed knowledge leads one away from God."[2]

The meeting also addressed the development of the Pilgrimage and Tourism Cluster "Arzamas — Diveevo — Sarov"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""". Governor Nikitin reported on the completion of the restoration of the Voskresensky Cathedral and the Spaso-Preobrazhenskiy Cathedral in Arzamas, the construction of the Spiritual and Educational Center named after Seraphim of Sarov, and the ongoing construction of the Holy Gates and the landscaping of the surrounding area.[2]

The abbess of the monastery is Abbess Sergiya (Konkova), who was awarded ecclesiastical honors by His Holiness Patriarch Kirill during the 2026 celebrations.[4]

In August 2026, a meeting took place in Diveevo between Patriarch Kirill and Nizhny Novgorod Region Governor Gleb Nikitin, Presidential Plenipotentiary Representative to the Volga Federal District Igor Komarov, and Archbishop George, at which the spiritual significance of Sarov and Diveevo, the revival of the monastery, and the relationship between science and faith were discussed.
