Sakharov Avenue — in Nizhny Novgorod this is the name given to a stretch of Gagarin Avenue, about two bus stops long.
It begins at Zhukov Square and runs towards the Shcherbinki-2 transport terminus.
The place is so named because nearby is the flat where Academician Sakharov lived during his exile in Gorky.
Today the flat houses a Sakharov Museum, where public and political readings are held and where his death mask is put on display every year on 14 December.
Interesting facts
- Throughout Sakharov's exile in Gorky a campaign in his defence was under way in many countries of the world. In particular, a square five minutes' walk from the White House, where the Soviet embassy in Washington was located, was renamed «Sakharov Square».
