The Youth Theatre (TYuZ) is a Nizhny Novgorod drama theatre located in the city centre, Freedom Square, Opera House. During the Soviet era it was known as the Gorky Youth Theatre.

Location and Urban Context

The theatre building stands in the Upper Town of Nizhny Novgorod, not far from Freedom Square. According to historical records about the block, the site occupied by the theatre was residential at the beginning of the 20th century; Zamkovaya Street, since demolished, ran along the rear of the theatre towards the cemetery grounds that are now Kulibina Park.

Soviet-era sources mention that Gorky Street into a broad ceremonial thoroughfare, along which new buildings for a drama theatre and a youth theatre were planned.

Creative History

Vladimir Vikhrov began his acting career on the stage of the Gorky Youth Theatre: Nizhny Novgorod Theatre School, he made his debut there in the role of Mitrofanushka in Fonvizin's comedy The Minor, and later played Pyotr in the play Meshchane based on Maxim Gorky's drama — before moving to the comedy theatre and later to the Gorky drama theatre.
