The Yevgeniy Evstigneev Nizhny Novgorod Theatre School is a secondary vocational institution in Nizhny Novgorod that trains specialists in the fields of "Actor of Dramatic Theatre and Cinema," "Actor of Nizhny Novgorod State Academic Puppet Theatre," "Art of Ballet," and "Specialist in Theatrical and Decorative Arts." Since 1996 it has had its own teaching theatre at Varvarskaya Street.[1]

History

The school already existed in the 1940s under the name of the Gorky Theatre School. According to the Ministry of Culture of Nizhny Novgorod Region, the school's origins go back to the theatre of Prince Shakhovskoy; in 1918 a theatre studio was founded on that basis, and in 1922 the studio received its own premises and was renamed the Nizhny Novgorod State Theatre Tekhnikum. The Ministry of Culture of Nizhny Novgorod Region describes the institution as one of the oldest theatre schools in Russia.[2] It was here that Evgeniy Evstigneev launched his acting career in 1946: school rector Vitaly Lebsky noticed the young percussion musician in a cinema orchestra, invited him to audition, and admitted him to the school.[1] The school was subsequently named after Evstigneev.[1]

From 1970 to 2012 the school's director was Tatyana Vasilyevna Tsygankova — Honoured Worker of Culture of the Russian Federation and Honorary Citizen of Nizhny Novgorod. Under her leadership the school's company repeatedly won All-Russian and international theatre festivals of student productions. Tsygankova was one of the organizers of the All-Russian festivals of graduation productions "Nizhny Novgorod Winter" and "Theatrical Youth"; in 2000 she was awarded the title of "Knight of the Badge of Public Recognition." In the final years of her life (until 6 May 2020) she served as Deputy Director of the Nizhny Novgorod Theatre School for Creative Affairs.[1]

Notable Alumni and Faculty

Among the school's graduates is Russian actress Yekaterina Vilkova, who completed her studies there in 2005 before going on to study at the Moscow Art Theatre School-Studio. The school's official website lists among its distinguished alumni the actors Irina Pegova, Natalya Bochkaryova, Artyom Bystrov, Andrey Ilyin, Natalya Surkova, Aleksandr Dedyushko, as well as actor and theatre educator Sergey Zemtsov and theatre director Mark Varshaver. The school's official website also names actor Aleksandr Pankratov-Chyorny and illustrator Valeriy Barykin among its distinguished alumni.[3][1] Actor Filipp Kotov (born 1989, Barnaul) also graduated from the Evstigneev School and, while still a student, took first place at the Shukshin Competition in Samara.[1]

Among the faculty who have worked with the Nizhny Novgorod Theatre School is director Vera Aleksandrovna Gorshkova, artistic director of the Nizhny Novgorod municipal Vera Theatre", who taught an acting course at the school. The school hosts a readers' competition named after V. A. Lebsky and Ye. G. Agapova, preserving the memory of figures connected with the institution's history.[3][1]
