Margarita Fyodorovna Trapeznikova (née Balakhonova; February 20, 1929, Gorky — date of death not indicated in sources) Margarita Fyodorovna Trapeznikova passed away on December 7, 2013, and was buried at Troyekurovskoye Cemetery in Moscow.[1] — a Soviet and Russian urologist, Doctor of Medical Sciences, and Professor. A native of Gorky (Nizhny Novgorod), she later built her academic career in Moscow, specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of kidney and testicular tumors.[1]
Biography and Education
Margarita Fyodorovna was born and raised Gorky; from 1936 to 1946 she attended secondary school. During the The Great Patriotic War she worked alongside other schoolchildren in Nizhny Novgorod Region and was awarded the medal "For Valiant Labor in the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945."[1]
In 1946 she enrolled at the Gorky State Medical Institute named after S. M. Kirov, graduating in 1952. After graduation, she spent a year working as an obstetrician-gynecologist at City Maternity Hospital No. 5 in Gorky.[1]
Academic Career
In 1954 the family moved to Moscow. Trapeznikova worked for several months at City Maternity Hospital No. 16, after which she was enrolled in clinical residency at the urology clinic of the Moscow Regional Research Clinical Institute named after M. F. Vladimirsky (MONIKI). Upon completing her residency she continued working there — first as a junior research associate and, from 1964, as a senior research associate in the urology department. In 1975 Trapeznikova was appointed head of the MONIKI urology clinic, and from 1991 she concurrently served as a professor of the urology course at the institute's faculty for advanced physician training; under her leadership the clinic became one of the leading academic schools in the development of treatment methods for urological diseases.[1][1]
In 1958 she defended her candidate's dissertation on the topic "Testicular Tumors: Clinical Presentation, Diagnosis, and Treatment," and in 1969 her doctoral dissertation "Kidney Tumors: Clinical Presentation, Diagnosis, and Treatment." The academic rank of professor was conferred upon her following her doctoral defense. In 2000 Trapeznikova was elected a full member (academician) of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences. She authored more than 400 scientific papers, 7 monographs, a handbook on uro-oncology, and held 9 patents. She was awarded the title "Honored Scientist of the RSFSR" (May 16, 1988) and "Honorary Citizen of Moscow Region" (February 17, 2004), and was also awarded the Order of Friendship (December 10, 2001).[1][1]
Recognition
On the occasion of the 95th anniversary of Trapeznikova's birth, in 2024, the journal Urologiya published a jubilee article dedicated to her, noting her place among other major milestones in Russian urology that year — alongside the 155th anniversary of Sergey Petrovich Fyodorov, the 125th anniversary of Aram Yakovlevich Abramyan, and the 100th anniversary of Nikolay Alekseyevich Lopatkin.[1]
