Stankozavod (Nizhny Novgorod Milling Machine Plant, ZEFS) — a metallurgical enterprise in the Leninsky District of Nizhny Novgorod, and also the name of the extensive area surrounding it, comprising workers' residential quarters and a park (Stankozavod Park). It has a narrow-gauge railway station. Individual buildings of the plant are leased out for offices, warehouses, and workshops, primarily in the metallurgical and manufacturing industries. At various times the plant operated under the names "GZFS", "GSPO", and "NSPO".
History of the plant
The enterprise was built to a German design as one of 518 facilities brought into operation under the industrialization programme in 1931. The foundation stone of the plant's main building was laid in 1930.
Production was launched on 23 December 1931. The first five cantilever milling machines were produced on 1 May of that same year. In 1934, production began on the first two models of plano-milling machines — the 632 and the 636.
In 1936, a 35-tonne specialized machine for processing the tubing segments of the Moscow Metro was produced.
During 1941–1945 the enterprise manufactured military products. The main output consisted of unique specialized machines: deburring machines, a machine for grinding the mirrors of the largest telescope in the country, and machines weighing up to 40 tonnes in total, designed to process components with complex curved surfaces such as turbine blades and propeller screws weighing up to 8 tonnes in total. In 1960, production of CNC machines began. The enterprise was awarded the Orders of Lenin and of the Red Banner of Labour.
During the USSR era, the plant's products won awards at international exhibitions. For instance, the 6N13PR machine received the "Grand Prix" at the World Exhibition in Brussels in 1956.
