Makaronka, the Pasta Factory (Vermani) — a strategic Soviet factory producing vermicelli, pasta, and, in the event of war, ammunition, facing Gagarin Avenue next door to the city's pre-trial detention facility (SIZO No. 1).
To the right, the factory's expansive grounds — enclosed by a concrete fence topped with barbed wire — border the territory of the military Experimental Mechanical Plant; in Soviet times it was believed that watches were made there.
Background
In the 1990s, following corporatization, the factory was renamed "Vermani."
In the second half of the 2000s, after a massive radio advertising campaign, the enterprise went bankrupt.
The factory's extensive grounds are now earmarked for high-rise residential development.
