Lenin Square — the main square of the Zarechka part of Nizhny Novgorod, located in Kanavino District.
It covers an area of 3.5 hectares and can accommodate approximately 175,000 people at once. At the center of the square stands a 17-meter monument to the same Lenin (sculptor Negoda).
Construction of the square
In 1967, in anticipation of Lenin's centenary (he was born in 1870), it was decided to create in the city of Gorky a central square named after (as you may have already guessed) Lenin. This was also justified by the fact that Lenin had visited Nizhny Novgorod on numerous occasions and had been among the founders of the local branch of the Social Democratic Party.
In 1968, the site was declared a Komsomol shock-construction project. "Thousands of Gorky residents, especially young people, helped with the construction."
Architects chose a location for the square in the area of the Nizhny Novgorod Yarmarka, on the territory bounded by Sovetskaya, Murashkinskaya, Sovnarkomovskaya streets and Manufakturnaya Embankment.
