Koverninsky District is located in the northern part of Nizhny Novgorod Region. It borders Varnavinsky, Semyonovsky District, Borsky District, Gorodetsky District, and Sokolsky Districts, as well as Kostroma Region. The administrative center of the district is the settlement of Kovernino.
History of Founding
In "General Information on Kostroma Governorate in the Second Half of the 19th Century," the remote Priuzolye area — where Koverninsky District now lies — is described as follows: "The southeastern part of Makaryevsky Uyezd was long a remote and impassable place, not only from the north but also from the west."
The first settlers along the Maly Utrus and Belbazh rivers were Old Believer monks. In the mid-17th century, the починок (small new settlement) of Kovernin appeared in Zaborskaya Volost, Yuryevetsky Uyezd, at the headwaters of the Kolobovka River. It is from the 17th century that Kovernino began to take shape as a volost center. Before the Revolution, Kovernino and its volost were part of Makaryevsky Uyezd of Kostroma Governorate. From April 1918 to October 1922, Kovernino was listed as an uyezd town of Kostroma Governorate. From October 1922, Koverninsky Volost became part of Semyonovsky Uyezd of Nizhny Novgorod Governorate and remained so until June 1929. On 10 June 1929, Koverninsky District was established. In 1962, the district was abolished and its administrative functions transferred to Semyonovsky District. By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR dated 12 January 1965, Koverninsky District was restored as an independent administrative-territorial unit, with the workers' settlement of Kovernino as its center.
Kovernino is the birthplace of a unique folk craft — Khokhloma painting.
Industry
Koverninsky District has no large industrial enterprises. The district's manufacturing sector is represented by the following main organizations: the Lenin Stud Farm, a branch of Volgotransgaz LLC; the Muravey Agricultural Consumer Cooperative; Koverninsky Mezhkhozyaystvennyy Leskhoz LLC; Promysel LLC; Khokhlomskiy Khudozhnik OJSC; FanKor LLC; and the Koverninsky Leskhoz State Enterprise of Nizhny Novgorod Region. The largest share of total district industrial output belongs to the Lenin Stud Farm, a branch of Volgotransgaz LLC (28.8 %). The district's agricultural sector comprises 15 farming enterprises, along with 5 registered peasant (farmer) households.
