The settlement of Bolshoe Murashkino, the administrative center of Bolshemurashkinskiy District of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, is located 90 km from Nizhny Novgorod.

It has existed since the 16th century, likely on the site of an older Mordva settlement. It served as a frontier fortress and was considered a town in the 17th century; traces of its fortifications survive. The trading-and-crafts selo specialized in fur coat, leather, and felting production, and also cast sleigh bells.

Notable and Honorary Residents of the Settlement

A native of Bolshoe Murashkino is the prominent literary critic and co-author of Russian language and literature textbooks A. G. Dementyev (1904–1986), who maintained ties with his hometown until the end of his life. Among our fellow countrymen are three Heroes of Socialist Labor: Aulov E. P., Mashikhin N. D., and Sokolov P. M.
