Arzamas State Pedagogical Institute named after A. P. Gaidar (АГПИ) is a higher education institution in Arzamas in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, which existed as an independent organization from 1934 to 2012 and trained teaching staff for the region. In 2012 it was reorganized into the Arzamas branch of Lobachevsky University.[1]

History and renamings

The institute was founded in 1934 as the Arzamas Teachers' Institute.[1] In 1952 it was renamed the Arzamas State Pedagogical Institute.[1] In 1966 the institute was given the name of writer A. P. Gaidar, and a bust of the writer was ceremonially unveiled at the entrance to the main building.[1]

The institute's building had previously belonged to a clergyman; during the Civil War it housed the headquarters of the Eastern Front of the Workers' and Peasants' Red Army, and later the House of Soviets.[1]

In 2012 the institute was reorganized into the Arzamas branch of Lobachevsky National Research State University of Nizhny Novgorod.[1] The branch is located at: Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, Arzamas, Karl Marx Street, 36.[1] As of 2019, the branch had 4,247 students enrolled with a staff of 144 faculty members; its head was Tamara Timofeevna Shchelina.[1]

Notable graduates

Among the institute's graduates are teachers, heads of educational institutions, and public figures of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast.

  • Dmitry Grigoriev — graduated from the institute in 2001, teacher of mathematics, algebra, mathematical analysis and descriptive geometry at city of Sarov; winner of the special nomination "For contribution to developing schoolchildren's knowledge, skills and abilities in the natural sciences" of the All-Russian professional skills competition "Teacher of the Year of Russia — 2022" (results announced on September 30, 2022, in Tyumen).[2]
  • Sergei Nikolaevich Kornilov — a native of the city of Lukoyanov (born 1966); graduated from the institute with the qualification "teacher of biology and chemistry"; later appointed director of Cadet School No. 4 in Nizhny Novgorod (introduced to the teaching staff on February 3, 2014, by the head of the administration of the Nizhegorodsky District, Igor Sogin).[3]
